Is it save to assume he already has a good sextant?
Sextant yes, Good one no. He owns the cheapest sextant Davis makes, but
does very well with it. I usually take mine, but since we were only doing
one leg offshore, Cape May, NJ to Block Island, RI, a leg of 200 miles I
decided not to bring mine a lone. I could have gotten maybe one LAN shot,
but not any star fixes. The hazy was so bad we used the radar several times
at night to scan the horizon for traffic.
A good DR is very important... Electronic do fail.
