Joe,
Yes it is common for liquid artificial horizons to give ultra accurate LOPs when using metal sextants. My record is 100 consecutive sun observation intercepts at or below 1 minute of arc when a GPS position was used as the assumed position for sight reduction. All remaining systematic errors are cut in half when the artificial horizon observation is divided by 2. Also there is no uncertainty for height of eye which is zero and the perpendicularity of the observation is perfect with the superimposed observation of the direct and reflected sun. If large intercepts pop up then it is time to check index error, chronometer error , and sight reduction math.
