Every Newfoundland and Labrador port I ever steamed into had a crowd of fishermen on the dock, watching and waiting.....Even the guys working on the boats would stop whatever it was they were working at to observe the newcomer as he cautiously approached and sidled up to the wharf. Needless to say, I would steam into the wharf at minimum speed and like the proverbial "little old lady". Better that than smashing into the wharf and confirming what you could see in the eyes of the local welcoming committee. As soon as I tied off, it was as if I didn't exist anymore. Nothing to see here!
