In other words, people playing with small boats should know not to cut close under the stern of other vessels, while people choosing to use taffrail logs should know to recover their log lines before entering waters frequented by idiots who have never heard of the "ordinary practice of seamen" and the extraordinary expectations that it imposes on those who go to sea. and I like the phrasing of his remarks very much. Nevertheless, I think I will change part of my standard orders from "report anything moving, unless obviously harmless" to "report anything moving [unless...], and scare away any yachts that try to cross the log line". Standard equipment to effect the last part is the fog horn and some not very diplomatic words, and as a last resort the log line must me taken on board (with the possible inconvenience of tangling it up because it was taken in improperly).
