George-For those with a good budget, there are doppler ultrasound "speedometers" that have no rotating wheels beneath the boat. Just a transducer like that of a depthsounder. But that "fountain" of water coming into your boat when you pull the impeller shouldn't admit more than a couple of pints with a little practice, it really should not terrify anyone. Here we try to remember to pull the impeller when securing the boat, so it stays out of the water and unclogged until the next sail. All of the reasons you mention do contribue to why sailors (not merchant marine, but pleasure sailors) are making so much use of the GPS. No water, no wiring, no mess. Only an appetite for penlight batteries and an illusion of ground speed. If you are really down to one last bronze spinner, you might consider taking it to a foundry and getting a quote on casting a few more--while you've got the chance. Many foundries will take in outside piece work that way, and the price is often less than you might think.
