I can't give an exact date, but HO229 was last updated in the very early 1970s (1972?).  I remember seeing those dates as the last update in the notice to mariners.

That list was compiled in part by Don Treworgy, who passed away in 2009, so I cannot ask him. My guess would be that the 'milestone' referred to here is computer generation and typesetting of a newer edition of H.O. 229. I think the actual first date of publication of the tables was around 1970, but I don't know. Certainly they were widely known in the mid-1970s.

It does rather make sense that 229 would have been published BEFORE 249, right? Perhaps they reserved the number for the project earlier, and it took much longer than expected to bring it to market.
