Reading this account stimulated me to finish a series of blog posts on sounding sextants, with an item on a Hughes and Sons double sextant shown in the attachment. More at www.sextantbook.com under "Sounding Sextants." I've also revised a brief description of fixing by horizontal angles in the first post of the series. I don't suppose the method is taught any longer?
