Byron:The question of a fix position with error plotted on a chart can be predicted as to in the center of a triangle or outside the triangle, With a visual Line of Position or a celestial LOP.
The prediction is the same for Visual or Celestial. If the targets are within 180 degrees the fix must be outside, If the targets are more that 180 the fix is in side. The Celestial plotting chart will show the conditions. I worked a celestial fix and added +10 minutes to the HO for systematic error. This gave me a blow up to chart the LOP’S to make them easy to see. I made the HO larger and the ZN shorter making “a “towards the ZN.
The Fix is marked FIX. Select: Antares ZN 181+Deneb036+Vega096, there are less than 180 degrees and their triangle is away from the fix. The fix is not in the triangle. As predicted.
Select Arc 247+Dube320+Vega050 the fix is inside the triangle.
Select Arc247+Deneb066 notice the reciprocal ZN’S equitably bracket the fix the same as to Navaids one to the NW the other to SE bearings would bracket the ship. Pick any combination of the above will predict in or out.
