    A method for darkening glass
    From: Igor S.

    Hello everyone,

This post is a continuation of my older post about novel materials for CN: http://fer3.com/arc/m2.aspx/novel-material-for-mirror-AH-IgorS.-aug-2019-g45615

Recently I was following a public lecture of an ex-dosimetry engineer who was one of the few who entered sarcophagus a few years later after the Chernobyl disaster to film and to take photos of a current state of interior for further assessments. In his lecture he had mentioned a method which was used  to darken an ordinary glass.

At that time in Soviet Union many goods were impossible to find including sunglasses. Employees of a nuclear plant were making it by themself! The recipe is the following: immerse a piece of glass (in a rubber glove on a piece of rope) in a spent fuel pool as close as possible to the Cherenkov glow for about 30 minutes. The result will be a black piece of glass.

As for Cherenkov glow see the explanation on wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cherenkov_radiation or watch it on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yjx0BSXa0Ks

Due to all kind of safety regulations it is difficult to realise on european nuclear plants (I have already asked a friend of mine who is a nuclear physicist).

    kind regards,
    Igor
