If one tries to adjust the error out completely, with changes in ambient temperature, etc, the instrument could easily end up with an error off the arc. I find that the step of having to read the drum and subtract from 80' to find the error is one extra place to mess up. Since I don't need any more of those, I like to stick with the positive error, which is simple enough to subtract from the sextant height. Paul Dahlgren
