Is most probable position (MPP) a dangerous misnomer?

Recent posts have referred a lot to most probable position (MPP), and it has led me to wonder exactly what we mean by it. Is there a danger that a novice, at least, might take the term too literally and think that that’s where we must be? Shouldn’t we always qualify it by saying that it’s a position from which there’s a particular percentage probability of being within a certain number of miles from? Might it be better to think of it as centre of probability (CoP) or, perish the thought and equally incorrectly, as our least improbable position (LIP)? DaveP
