I find it most convenient to set the plotting sheet scale so one degree is a convenient number of millimeters (say 20 or 30). That means the latitude intervals are marked first, then longitudes. Also, I prefer to draw my reference parallel of latitude across the center of the sheet, not the bottom. Regarding the cosine of 53 = -0.918282, not 0.6018, the former value occurs when the calculator is set for radians instead of degrees. I'm puzzled by Mike's statement that he has no calculator, since clearly he has the computational power to compose a message and transmit it on the Internet — ?
