    A quick Mars lunar

This summer I upgraded to an Astra III Professional sextant from the plastic Davis I’ve had for almost 10 years. Noticing Mars relative to Moon’s horns on my way home, once I got there I calculated the distance of 24° 45.0’ (= topocentric distance plus Moon semidiameter), preset the sextant (I did not even check the index error) and mounted the 7x35 scope. I was pleased to see the red dot just a tiny bit inside the illuminated crescent. All done within 10 minutes of arriving home just about half an hour ago. A satisfactory result, I think, given the circumstances.
