Greg,
I fully understand your Doniol method, and that it does not require logs, or calculator. I admire and respect your, and Robert Bernecky’s work in modernising and improving CN techniques.
In my last post, I was referring to your rearranged Doniol worksheet to produce a time sight result. I used the term “ log haversine tables” only because that is what they are named in my almanac, and these have existed on my boat for 30 years. My tables are of the form where natural and log haversines are shown side by side, so that is how I get my natural haversines or versines to work your sight form. The log bit is irrelevant.
Presenting natural and log haversines in this way is not new. I refer to a textbook in my hand. “ The combined form of table (the copyright of which is strictly reserved) first appeared in the “Requisite Tables” by Mr Percy L.H,Davies in 1905...”
A large part of my interest in CN derives from nostalgic and emotional wishes to feel how my forefathers navigated. Modifying or improving those methods is partly counter-productive. I nevertheless welcome practical progress and simplification.
We are on the same side!
Regards,
Brian Walton.
