There aren't trees in every direction, or always up to 60 degrees, but
they do restrict visibility quite a bit. For that matter, my GPS
takes a long time acquiring a signal too.

Thanks - that's exactly the sort of thing I was looking for.
Actually, there's a lot of good discussion at that web site that
didn't turn up in my Google searches. They must not be permitting
Google to index. Is there a particular reason for that?
Thanks to everyone for all your very detailed answers - you have given
me a lot to think about.
(By the way, I've learned my son in law happens to have some mercury,
so I might give that a try.)
