Re: sextant for use on land

I have 2 aircraft bubble sextants.  The first a 5851 I bought from
Celestaire.  I chose the one without the averager since it's lighter.
Came in great condition with a good bubble.  I've been very happy with
it.  Works well, I get within a couple on mins of known locations.  I
too am surrounded by trees and far from the coast, so I works just fine
for my purposes.  Sun and moon during the day are obvioulsy easy
targets.  I have had no problems with planets and the bright navigation
stars at night.  The second is an A10 I bought on eBay.  The quadrant
was frozen, so it need a press to free it.  After dis- and re- assembly
it works fairly smoothly.  (not as well as the reconditioned 5851)
It's quite small and compact.  The bubble is somewhat large, but I
haven't yet tried to do anything about it.  I got it mostly to see what
it was like and how it worked.  I don't get quite the accuracy of the
5851, due to the large (too large) bubble.  Letcher's self contained
navigation with ho208 describes his ocean crossing with the 5851.
