    I remember reading about this somewhere. Apparently ships in that period
    had the cable attached such that one turned the the wheel to port to go for
    the ship to go to the right. Perhaps one of the Master Mariners in this
    group might be able to confirm.
    
    Another snippet of information, apparently when you ask the helmsman
    (helmsperson !) to turn 10 degrees, one should say "right 10 degrees" and
    not "starboard 10 degrees". Port and starboard only refer to the sides of a
    vessel.
