Regarding artificial horizons. The Davis horizon works well with oil, which doesn't fog the glasses. It works better if painted black or with black oil. Lately, instead of painting black, I have taken to putting in some dark Karo-brand corn syrup, then overlaying with oil. The Karo corn syrup's high viscosity reduces sloshing of the oil. It also absorbs moisture, reducing freezing of rain that might get in and crack the pan.
