Actually, there was an accident caused that way.  A small plane was
opened up for its annual inspection, and the aileron controls rigged
backwards when it was reassembled.  First time the owner took it out,
he didn't notice the problem until he was in the air on takeoff.
First attempt put in a little crosswind correction, and BAM, right
into the ditch.  Nobody killed, but I think the plane was wrecked.

After that, my instructor got me into the habit of not only
checking that the ailerons work during pre-flight inspection, but
that they turn in the right direction.

(I think there might actually be a way to fly the plane in those
conditions, provided you have enough time:  Since there are two
control wheels, shift your hands to the right so you're holding
the right side of one control wheel with your left hand, and the
left side of the other with your right.)
