Dear John, thanks for the PDF!
Dear Tom and David, the link to the http://www.navworld.com/navcerebrations/mayday.htm from the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cessna_188_Pacific_rescue article is repeatedly dead for me (here in Russia).
I need some explanation on the "200 nm VHF circle" trick: was Cessna doing a small circle (where it was at the moment) to keep its 200 nm VHF receivability circle almost static while DC-10 flew through the circle to access its center (i.e. the Cessna) location? It was possible because: 1) Cessna had enough fuel remaining; 2) DC-10 is fast enough to cross the 400 nm in reasonably short time, right? The rest was to judge the chord length (the length the DC-10 covered till it lost the Cessna's VHF signal) to the 400 nm circle diameter, a trick similar to one used by Hipparchus and Ptolemy to access the "Sun's orbit" eccentricity and center location (by inequality of durations of four seasons), right?
Thank you in advance.
Warm regards,
Tony
