Re: A story of a pilot lost over Pacific and saved by a passenger jet crew?

Finally I watched the movie, now the situation is mostly clear. However, if it was not for my interest in celestial navigation, especially - in the emergency navigation - I would not watch such a movie - too "holywoodish" to my liking: not enough details on the how-to's used, to much drama.

By the way, I remember reading a book (many, many years ago) about a true story of a two-seater flying north from south end of Chile. Midway the plane lost half of the power because the pilot did not switch the intake manifold to warm the air on the exhaust manifold pipes - and one of carburetors iced. There was also some problem with receiving the radio beacons, so they lumped in the night rather desperately.

The book's author shocked me (a ~10-year-old boy then) with his constant admirations with pilot's cool-headedness and calmness - it looked like he - the author - would just panic and pray instead of professionally doing the job at hands. I thought then (and think the same today) - every mature man should not panic at an emergency and try his best to handle the situation. The author was apparently a devout catholic...

Back on topic: I still would like to find the through-out description and actual figures of the Cessna episode over Pacific.

    Regards,

    Tony
