John, IMHO the first is an inferior mirage (warm sea cold air). Andy has at the bottom of his page http://mintaka.sdsu.edu/GF/mirages/mirsims/loom/loom.html#LandS a link to the photos of Pekka Parviainen which changed in the mean time. You find them now here http://www.polarimage.fi/ Your first photo looks very similar to the ones shown there. I suggest however that you ask the specialist directly. Andy is very helpful. His mail address is aty (at) mintaka.sdsu.edu. May be you can inform him also that the link on his web-page requires to be updated. Regarding "I have to look back in the records to find the ambient pressure". I found the web-page from wunderground very useful to retrieve for a certain place previous (and actual) meteorological data at a given time. Marcel
