Then a what-if question entered my head. What if each aircraft lost all navigation equipment except for one compass and voice radio via satellite? Assume that when the equipment started failing both crews had the foresight to find a pen and piece of paper (car park receipt?) and write down some critical numbers.

If the navlist members discovered that their bubble sextants were in their checked luggage how would they determine altitude and get QFA27/LAN800 to a safe landing in South America?
Maybe the made for TV movie Mercy Mission - the Rescue of Flight 771 should be added to Frank's list of films in which "sextants" are used. I have not seen the film but have heard that Hollywood created the impression that an all-American crew performed the rescue (Grrr!!! if that is true).
