A pocket atlas just might be good enough to get you home. A pencil width is about 5' nm.

We are in danger of getting off-topic but when I read this post I remembered something about the Erebus accident which Vette investigated. The flight was for sightseeing but the DC10 pilot (who was an ex-navigator) was not given any visual charts by Air NZ. Passengers were given a simple pamphlet showing the route. The pilot's wife reported that the day before the flight he placed an atlas on the kitchen table and plotted the route.
