Doug,
I highly recommend the Mariners' Museum in Newport News, Virginia, U.S.A. It has been designated by Congress as our national maritime museum. Currently, there is an exhibit on display titled "Age of Exploration" which showcases many aspects of historic navigation. See my post here.
Also, I live just a stone's throw from the museum. If you are able to visit, let me know and perhaps we can meet up for lunch and some navigation conversation...my treat!
