Thanks for posting this link. It's interesting to see how little things have changed.

After spending lot of time on a wild goose chase messing with determinants trying to reconstruct the great circle diagram as a nomogram I reaslized it's quite a bit simpler than that. I am now able to replicate the scales of the diagram and attach the explanation here.
