If your goal is simple position finding, then celestial navigation can certainly be performed without a deep understanding of the mathematics.
A cookbook approach, using common forms and readily available information, will transform your sextant observations into a position.
There are even programmatic solutions available which completely eliminate the drudgery and mistakes associated with hand written arithmetic, such as those recently offered by Andres Ruiz. In using these, it is all about the sextant observation with effortless transformations.
And in a sense, you are correct. Hundreds of navigators have applied the standard techniques sketched above without deep mathematical understanding and have successfully navigated from port to port. Its helpful to have a deeper understanding (some more than others) but its not a requirement.
Have fun!
