I don't recall mention of the Freiberger AH, nor prices thereof. As you have likely noticed, Randall Morrow who tried both the Davis AH and the mirror type, sings the praises of the latter. Of course, he admits building his own precision bubble level, he seems handier than I, having purchased he vial itself from an outfit in the UK. He fabricated the bases, and as I recall also made some bubble vials himself.
As to the Davis AH and your problems therewith,I don't seem to have experienced problems such as you described, possibly just dumb luck. As to costs, by far, the greatest part of mine was the mirror, for which I paid $35 as I recall. Possibly one could be obtained for less, I don't know. Perhaps a plain mirror would suffice, that would be much less costly.
Any way you look at it, this celestial navigation game is a lot less costly than shooting, especially given that a sextant, the biggest expense item, given proper care, will likely outlast the user. There are also fewer "consumables".
Scheduled for some medical treatment Friday, might be down for a bit, but when I get some sights with the mirror ah, I will post them.
