Marty,
Congratulations! You have redicovered the sextant stand. I was wondering when somebody on the "List" would do so. It was a stock in trade item for old time Hydrographical Surveyors, especially in conjunction with the artificial horizon when observing stars. You can read up on its use in Admiral Wharton's excellent book entitled Hydrographic Surveying published in 1920. Its use greatly enhances accuracy
and is highly recommended. for shoreside observations.

I found it difficult to try to use my 12 power inverting scope to check for index error and side error, very hard to hold it steady. I fabricated a bracket to attach the sextant to a tripod. The bracket attaches to a ball head mounted on the tripod. I just wanted to share the concept as I find it helpful when others show how they solved a problem. The idea worked wonderfully and let me get an precise calibration on the sextant. So well, in fact, that I may use it for some of my sights, as most of my sights are on land.
