Dear Bill,
Taking off by a clear night from JFK and EWR - and especially from EWR indeed - can be a magnificent view from the cockpit.
While it is even more impressive when the big turn - sometimes in excess of 180° - is on "your" side in the cockpit, my very best enjoyable night departures from there happened when sitting on the middle Jump Seat.
Some of them where absolutely awesome, especially the big left turns to ORD.
Nice memories ...
