To find that ones "longitude by observation agreed within five miles of that by dead-reckoning", the latter based on a "rotator log" and "intuition", being 43 days out, to me seems like a good yarn. Have you ever found what "discrepancy in the tables" Slocum wrote about - or was that just another good story?
Enclosed my solution. Several variants are possible, depending on available log table. I guess Slocum was comfortable without seconds of arc, maybe he used half- or quarter-minutes, but I doubt it.
