The two systems were equivalent mathematically. I would think a straightforward frame of reference change. The problem was how to show a preference for one frame over the other. The blog I mentioned goes into that. Sorry for the lack of a citation

Absent any understanding of Newton's ideas governing the motions of bodies one could always suppose that deus ex machina causes the observations to be due to a stationary earth and moving celestial bodies.
