Starting to dredge up some memories. I recall that Galileo’s observations of Jupiter’s moons, which clearly revolved around it, constituted the evidence that convinced him that the Ptolomaic model was incorrect. The problem was tying that piece of evidence into a rigorous proof.

Absent any understanding of Newton's ideas governing the motions of bodies one could always suppose that deus ex machina causes the observations to be due to a stationary earth and moving celestial bodies.
