Re: VENUS, MARS, MOON ... and upcoming Camera double Lunars ?

    Hello Peter,

An interesting observation about Uranus, which (for a good reason) is hardly ever mentioned in CelNav context. Indeed, it will be slightly to the west of the (almost) new Moon’s crescent, so we’d be looking at the near-limb distance. After its semidiameter is subtracted from the centered topocentric lunar distance (based on the UT and AP given by Kermit), I get almost exactly 2 degrees, just as you said.

    Hi Kermit,

Thanks for the heads-up on this interesting conjunction.  For your proposed lunar on Feb 22 at 3:00 UT, it seems that Uranus is also in the field, about 2 degrees from the lunar limb.  A great pity that this planet is not listed in the NA :-).  I'll try to get a photo if the weather is clear.

As for the minimum angular distance between Venus and Mars, it sounds like something that might be listed in one of Meeus's books if you want a double-check on your number.  I wonder what position on the Earth's surface would minimize the apparent distance, taking into account the small planetary parallaxes.

    Cheers,

    Peter
